statement of intent
merriment in writing and writing in merriment
Hello friends.
Just a short one today to explain my intentions with this newsletter over the coming weeks.
I’ve very much enjoyed writing about the adventures I had recently along Offa’s Dyke and on Anglesey, but my priority with this newsletter will now turn once again to criticism. That’s not to say I’m limiting myself to only discussing texts, but I do feel that that’s where my strengths and interests with Substack most comfortably coexist. For that reason, may I introduce you to four new types of post:
1: ‘moving pictures:’
These posts will be film-related. I hope to write these whether they pertain to something I’ve seen only recently or something I’ve been chewing over for some time.
2: ‘the poetry dig:’
Posts of this kind will be about poetry. Not exactly, or at least not exclusively, close readings and analysis; my aim is simply to be enthusiastic about poems I enjoy and to take you on a journey with me as I try to uncover why it is that I like them.
3: ‘a tale unfolds:’
In this third type of post, I plan to write about fiction. My thought is that I’ll write about it from a reader’s perspective, but who knows, maybe it will stretch to incorporate some musings on the process of writing, also.
4: ‘review:’
I’m going to format these pieces rather like review articles in the London Review of Books. They could be about anything, so keep your eyes peeled, I suppose.
That’s all for now. I’m still plugging away at other writing and at coding during the week, so I will keep you posted as these things develop.
